COD testing is a good better indicator of organic pollutants in industrial wastewater containing cyanides and heavy metals. COD testing affords rapid response to changing conditions before critical problems develop. 

In this test a reagent blank is used instead of the usual water blank referred to in the general photometer operating instructions. The reagent blank is prepared by adding deionised or distilled water to the reagent tube and then digesting the tube in the same manner as for the water sample.
It is not necessary to prepare a reagent blank each time the test is carried out. The reagent blank tube may be prepared weekly and used repeatedly with all samples prepared from the same batch of reagent tubes. The reagent blank should be stored in the dark between uses.

Details of Chemical Oxygen Demand Test:

2mL of a water or watse water sample are added to a 16mm glass culture tube containing the digestion reagent and a catalyst. The tube is capped with a polypropylene, PTFE lined cap and heated in a block digester at 150C for 2 hours. The orange Hexavalent chromium is reduced to a greenish trivalent chromium. The analytical range for the spectrophotometric method is 5-150ppm (measured at 420nm).

The used COD Tubetests contain strong sulfuric acid and other chemicals, so reagents must be handled carefully. The contents of the pipe should be disposed of in accordance with the requirements of local authorities.
These test tubes are SGC certified. These tubes can only be used once, so they cannot be reused.

To use the digital heater for the COD test, set the temperature on the digital display to 150°C. On no account must the heater be set at a higher temperature than that specified as this may cause a hazard through pressure build-up in the COD tubes.

Open COD test tube, hold it at an angle and slowly add
2.0 mL of the pretreated sample solution from the reaction tube without mixing so that two separate layers
are formed.
Screw cap securely on to test tube, hold tube by the cap, place tube into the safety bottle and shake
(Caution, test tube becomes hot). Place tube into the heating block. Start heating programme.
After 2 h remove test tube from heating block, allow to cool down to room temperature and shake gently
several times.
Clean outside of test tube and measure.
Adjust photometer to zero by using blank value “NULL”
